Biography

Johannes Andries ("Uncle" Jan) van Zutphen (Utrecht, October 7, 1863 – Hilversum, June 7, 1958) was a Dutch trade union leader of the diamond workers' union and founder and chairman of Sanatorium Zonnestraal in Hilversum. He is recognized as an inspiring fighter for workers' rights and against tuberculosis. He is associated with the so-called 'Copper Handles Fund' – named after the handles of worn-out tools that were sold to build up the union's tuberculosis care.
